Day Services for Seniors

Child & Family Services of Southwestern Michigan, Inc. (CFSSWMI) has been serving our community for the past 119 years. Since 1991 we have offered Day Services for Seniors (DSS) programs serving the Alzheimer's and dementia populations, in addition to individuals with other physical impairments. Currently it is estimated that as many as 5.2 million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer's disease. This number is expected to grow over the next 50 years as the population ages and life span increases.

Our agency is a non-profit corporated accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA). We are committed to following the highest standards of care in our facilities. Our mission is to foster the development of community, family and individual potential and capabilities which support health, self sufficient, fully functional lives for children, families and adults of all ages. Our commitment to excellence is evidenced by fact that both our day services programs were first in the state of Michigan to be registered as Eden Alternative Centers. The Eden Alternative Model of Care is based on the philosophy of self-determination and enhances the lives of elders and their families, as well as the staff and volunteers who work together to provide direct service in our centers.

We are also partnered with the Michigan and National Day Service Support Group. This group is a coalition of adult day service providers throughout the state of Michigan. They provide the latest tools and resources for Day Service employees, which include creative activities, growth and development of high quality adult day service programs, and support through quarterly meetings and annual conferences. Our Day Services for Seniors program philosophy and mission assures the highest quality of life for our seniors and consequently assisting them in maintaining independence in their homes and communities for as long as possible.

This program also allows caregivers to continue to work outside their home and/or have respite from the care of a loved one who requires 24 hour, 7 day care and the opportunity to keep their loved ones in the home longer.  Nursing home care can be cost prohibitive, not to mention the guilt and stress care providers often feel when having to make a decision to place a loved one in a long-term care facility. Seniors can suffer from loneliness, boredom and helplessness. Our Day Services for Seniors Program alleviates these problems. While in our program, clients experience an atmosphere of choices, variety and spontaneity. They are surrounded by plants, animals, music and caring individuals of all ages. The senior's life is value. There is opportunity to give care as well as receive care. Socialization occurs and friendships are formed.
